LYONS INSTITUTE

EQUINE MYOFASCIAL MASSAGE

Learn Myofascial Massage Techniques for the Horse

This course is designed to help you alleviate painful conditions horses often suffer from and deepen your relationships with the horses you care for.

You will learn about equine myofascial massge techniques. We will start off by reviewing some methods for assessing structural issues that can lead to patterns off stress, pain, and a reduction in the performance and well-being of the horse.

We will talk about the signs and symptoms to look out for that may indicate your hose is experiencing pain, and then demonstrate the massage tools and techniques you can use to address these issues.

There is a focus on to learning the musculoskeletal anatomy and especially the directional flows of the muscles and fascia. We will discuss common locations where ischemic tissue is found, specific tools and methods for working those areas, and appropriate exercises to follow your sessions.

Throughout this video series there will be an emphasis on exploration, play, and having fun while learning these incredible healing modalities. Judah will teach you how he blends these two styles of touch together, when you might want to use each one, and why the two are such a powerful combination. We hope you will join us in creating a healthier, happier, and more loving world for our horses and ourselves!

 3D Anatomy Visualizations

Lyons Institute has been setting the bar for craniosacral and myofascial 3D animations and visualizations for over 12 years.

Michael Thurston’s work allows you to gain a deeper understanding of the bones, muscles, and fascia that you will be feeling under your hands. Understanding the flow and layering of the muscular tissue is essential to performing effective myofascial work.

The animations of the muscle actions, fiber flows, and stretching fascial sheets help you to understand the complex horse anatomy and the interconnected nature of the tissues.

“Hi Judah, I'm really the liking equine video series. The structure you've created of anatomy, animated demo and then live demo keeps a sensible organization and there's enough Cranial Sacral in the Rolfing program to bring it into the soft tissue treatments until I can delve more into the Cranial Sacral.

At times you drift in your narration but that keeps it less clinical, and it works much better for me than clinical presentations ever did. For instance, relating to your horse trip in the Rockies and the saddle issue helps settle/internalize information input. It allows me to go back to my past and see how disconnected I was at times with my horses but also how connected my lead mare and I were."

Judah's Journey

As I approach my 75th year on the planet I wanted to create, with my partner Michael, a video series that would hopefully just keep on giving for all the horses on our water planet. They have given so much to humanity for thousands of years! I am going to share with you my 35 years of experience as a practitioner and 32 years as a teacher of the healing arts.

I started this journey at the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration in Boulder, Colorado. I have studied with the Upledger Institute for Cranial Sacral Therapy, and a two-year program on the Biodynamic approach of cranial sacral therapy the Karuna Institute in Devon, England. I have also participated in numerous continuing education programs to deepen my understanding of approaches to healing and wellness.

My experience with horses began as a 4-year-old! I drove my grandmother crazy as I slipped two blocks away through the woods to the Hungarian stables to watch these giant beings. My riding didn’t start until summer camp in my early teens and then my later teens when I bought my first horse, a Leo bred quarter horse and traveled 600 miles over 6 months along the Continental Divide.

From 1970-1973 I ran the largest equitation center in Colorado under Captain Zygmunt Bilwin, a Polish cavalry officer and twice Olympian. If you don’t know what it’s like hanging out with 50 horses, it’s hard to explain. I sometimes rode 8 horses a day. When Captain Bilwin died, I traveled to Pennsylvania to spend some time learning from Major Jeremy Beale, a former British cavalry officer.

In the late 70’s I worked for Cashvan Arabians in Virginia Beach, Virginia, an 82 horse breeding farm. My responsibility was the care of 9 stallions. After I left Cashvan Arabians, I met and learned from Linda Tellington Jones. Linda was teaching a different approach to handling horses than anything I had learned from cavalry officers and cowboys. She used mazes, much like what I learned from Pat Parelli 20 years later, and her way of touching a horse which was called TTouch. I immediately used it with remarkable “success” with my horses. I could see that the horses were more relaxed having me tacking and riding them.

In 1989 I began working on my Arabians and other folks’ horses using the Rolfing concepts that I had been trained in at the Rolf Institute. The results were immediate, especially around their withers, neck, and back. 5 years later I started incorporating cranial sacral therapy and the Bowen technique into my work.

I also studied the work of Jack Meagher, who clarified even further the concept of trigger points and muscular dysfunction. Jack was a giant in the field who impacted many equine massage therapists simply because his approach worked so beautifully on releasing muscular dysfunction and restoring normal balance and pain-free movement!

And ten years after that, I incorporated the Biodynamic approach to cranial sacral therapy - a concept which is deeply embedded in our video series.

My last focus was taking care of an Olympian’s five horses. She finished in the 2012 London Olympics in the eventing games, which was quite an honor for her!

FAQs

Do I need prior CST or myofascial training? Expand

Absolutely not! This course will introduce you to everything to begin the journey with confidence. And by the time you have “completed” the course, based on the amount of knowledge we are passing on, you will see fantastic changes in your horse and your relationship with them. It's important to proceed with our recommended method of using this course. I have been teaching since 1992 and I understand what it takes to “own” the work.

Also, if you are inspired and want to dive deeper into understanding the concepts embodied in the work, we encourage you to check out some of our other courses. Now, if you have had training in either CST or Myofascial techniques, you are ahead of the herd and will transition very easily to working with horses. If you already work on horses, I guarantee there is a wealth of knowledge from my years of doing the work that will absolutely deepen your knowledge on many levels. I promise!

How long do I have access to the videos? Expand

Forever! They are downloadable to your hard drives. Or just visit the site for each lesson. And if you ever have an equipment failure, just come on back and download them again.

What if I have questions about the course material? Expand

Again you have a lifetime access to questions either directly to Judah at: judah@lyonsinstitute.com or if you need technical assistance with your online account you can email: support@lyonsinstitute.com. I encourage you to ask questions. Teachers love motivated students!

Is this course approved for continuing education credit? Expand

Yes, this course has been approved by the NCBTMB for 8.5 CE hours. More information on CEUs here.

Do I need to be supervised by a veterinarian? Expand

You do not. That being said, I assume you have a vet or the horse that you will be working on for an owner, will have a vet supervising the horse's well-being. We highly encourage you to get your veterinarian involved with your journey. They see hundreds of horses if not thousands a year and their knowledge on the horse’s anatomy and physiology and overall health goes way beyond most horsemen and horsewomen! Your knowledge will accelerate much more quickly with your veterinarian's input. I can’t imagine any vet who would be unwilling to help you to understand the challenges that are inherent with conformation issues, saddle fit, shoeing etc. Also, lean on your farrier (horses do all the time, you might as well too). He or she can give you awesome insights into what anatomical challenges you might be facing with a particular horse’s feet and what muscles and tendons could use attention from both of you to help keep your steed sound. Remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Does this allow me to practice professionally? Expand

I get this question a lot. Honestly, it’s too big of a world with too many countries and states, each with their own regulations, for me to answer that question. Way too many hurdles and hoops to jump over and through! We do know this, after practicing our course for some time, you will be good, very good in fact, at making the world a wee bit better for our horse partners who have given so much to us for millennia. My intention is vast on this vision and my commitment is steadfast!

If you want to become a professional, I encourage you to find out for yourself what the regulations and licensing laws are in your specific location. But, one step at a time. Learn the work first, and learn it well. If you need more information about becoming a professional, if you are not one already, email me and I will give you what guidance I can.

What is your return / refund policy? Expand

Unfortunately, due to the nature of digital materials we do not accept returns or give refunds. The information on this page, preview videos, and course outline should give you a very clear idea of what we are presenting. We encourage you to ask as many questions as you need to make an informed decision before galloping ahead! There are no stupid or silly questions! In 17 years of selling our videos we have had 2 returns! And they weren’t due to the quality of the courses we sold. We do promise you this course is a game changer for you and your horses!

I have a different question. Expand

We are happy to answer any other questions you have. Please contact us at judah@lyonsinstitute.com and we will get back to you as quickly as we can.

This is not just a follow the dots video series, this is an exploration into consciousness. The work that we are sharing with you goes beyond pure technique, although there is a ton of that in this video series. We want to usher you into a way of thinking and being around your horses that will change who you are as person and by doing so change your relationship with your horses. The transformation can be magical! I promise you that if you follow our presentation and practice as prescribed, you will be amazed at what happens between you and your horses! Your horses will be healthier, happier and perform better for you, guaranteed! This is not one of these popular two or four-day courses to mastery, this is a journey that continues as long as you have horses to touch and communicate with.

I am available to answer your questions via email anytime for as long as I am embodied. Mount up, you are invited on a great adventure we have created for you and the horses of the world!
